3/7/09 Florida Bay- Gettin Jiggy With It

Again, this week we were faced with windy conditions and cool water temps. Last week we fished the Backcountry Fly
Championship in the skinny water sightfishing. We switched it up this week for the Backbone lures 1 jig/fly Tournament out of
Islamorada. I did some prefishing and did good catching both snook and reds on 1 jig. Fishing with me on tournament day were
my good friends Ken and Todd. We ran from Islamorada to flamingo and focused on channel runoffs, islands, creeks and
mangrove shorelines. First thing in the morning I get tight to a snook and Ken had just finished tying his jig on and grabbed the
net to net my fish. After snapping our pics of the fish, Ken looks over at me and Todd and says "What happened to my jig" as
he held his leader in his hand with no jig as it appeared it was cut clean. As I write this we still don't know what happened but
by 8:15am Ken lost his jig. In this tournament each angler receives one jig of his choice(Backbone Lures skimmer jig) and has to
fish with that jig all day. If you loose it...your done. So, Ken was done for the day(at least for any points in the tournament).
Todd and I fished hard and caught snook, trout and jacks while Ken just fun fished and caught snook and redfish. Todd and I
kept busy when we were not catching fish, we were trying to get our jig out of the under water obstacles we kept hooking
into(we were really good at that). Even though we lost 1 jig early in the am and got back late to the tournament at the end of the
day we still managed to have an excellent time. All three of us had a blast catching fish and competing in the tournament. I want
to thank Paul Tejera for putting up a great tournament! Congrats to the winners!
It looks like this coming week the winds are laying down and the temps are going up. Should make some sweet conditions to do
some sightfishing. Give me a call and we will set something up!

Fishing tournament reports
2/27-28/09 Florida Bay- Backcountry Fly Championship

First of all I would like to thank Charlotte Ambrogio (Tournament Director) for making the event possible and making it what it
is and to everyone else that made the event possible. My good friend Ken Diaz and I teamed up for the event. There would be
one thing different in this tournament than in every other tournament Ken and I fish. This time Ken would be poling me around
and I would be fishing. We would be going after snook and redfish on fly. It was windy both days and the water was still a bit
cold in the early am. After making a long run on day 1 our first stop gave me shots at redfish and snook which I was only able to
capitalize on the redfish. The rest of the day we worked hard to get that snook we needed but 3:00pm came around and it was
time to call it a day and to look forward to day 2 of the tournament. I was hoping for some calmer winds for day 2 but the wind
had its own plan. With the windy conditions we ran to the same general area as day one and started the hunt. Soon enough we
came across some fish, some being spooky and some having lock jaw. After spooking some fish and having a few redfish ignore
the fly I spotted a redfish cruising slowly and dropped the fly (shrinnow) in his path and BAM! Fish On!. Again we had our
redfish, but no snook and time was running out. 3:00pm rolled through again and it was time to head back to the Lorelei in
Islamorada. Even though we didn't get that snook we needed, Ken and I still had a great time catching redfish on fly and
competing in the tournament. I also want to thank Ken for poling me around both days despite the windy conditions. Congrats
to all the winners! This week we will be fishing the Backbone Lures 1 jig/fly tournament Saturday March 7th and looking to get
some redemption on some snook.

Islamorada Redghost Stalk-Florida Bay

First of all I would like to thank Jim and Sherri Trice and all those who helped put this event together.
Ken and I started the morning great, by 7:30am Ken landed a nice bonefish and 300 points on the board. We had a few more
good shots at bonefish but the tide was turning and it was time for us to head deeper into Floriday Bay and look for some
redfish. We found a few and had shots, pulled some hooks and just plain unlucky. Thats the name of the game. 11 out of 37
teams got bonefish and 9 got the redfish bonefish slam. Congrats to all the winners!
Ken and I had a great time even though the redfish tortured us but we will be looking forward to next year and another fun
event.
On another note, there has been plenty of small tarpon around in the backcountry. These fish are fun on artificial or fly and can
be a challenge to get to the boat at times with there acrobatic jumps and bony mouths making it hard to stay connected.
The deeper shorelines and islands have been tough due too the south south east winds we have had.
The redfish and snook have been up on the flats and runoffs were you can find some clean water holding bait. The right
presentation making your artificial/fly look as natural as possible is the key to getting these fish in the skinny water to eat.

Florida Bay-2009 Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Tournament

The Herman Lucerne Memorial Backcountry Tournament started off this past weekend on friday September 25 with the
kickoff party and some good food. The week prior to the tournament I got out a few days to stay dialed in. Ken joined me on
friday for some fun/prefishing, and we found lots of high water like most people but we also found some good fish holding in
areas that were usually too shallow.
We had our game plan for the tournament and we stuck to it. We started day one of the tournament jumping small tarpon early
in the morning on lures and jerkbaits. I lost count on how many tarpon we jumped but managed to land two on artificial. We
then got into some snook and some redfish. Our snook did not get pass 26" all weekend but we did manage to upgrade our
redfish to 27.5". Ken also managed to get a 13" snapper and 18.5" trout on artificial putting us at around 108 points. Fishing
was tough some parts of the day with higher than normal water levels. Only 3 slot snook were caught for the tournament on
saturday with no slot snook caught sunday. We spent the last hour of the tournament throwing bucktail jigs at tailing bonefish to
get more points on artificial but we could not seal the deal. We packed it up and checked in at the Lorelei in Islamorada.
After check in we headed towards Sundowners in Key Largo for the awards and dinner. Ken ended up winning Artificial Grand
Champion in the guided division with the most points on artificial overall. Ken and I had a great time fishing and competing in
what has to be one of the most challenging tournaments around with 7 species being the target(Tarpon, Snook, Bonefish,
Redfish, Snapper, Sea trout, Black Drum).
Thanks to Charlotte Ambrogio, Lloyd Wruble, Tony Nobregas and to the rest of her team for putting up a great event as usual.

A few pics of the week/weekend:
BackCountry Fly Championship 2010

My cousin and I teamed up for the event and like always what a great tournament with the best of the best
competition around without a doubt. The weather was tough and so was the fishing. Out of 2 days of fishing and 31
teams only 25 fish were scored. Both days were windy and saturday afternoon was crazy windy. We toughed it out and
fished hard and caught fish both days. The fish were being a little skiddish but we had plenty of shots and capatalized
on the redfish both days. We scored a 25.25" redfish the first day and a 27" fish the second putting us at 6th place
overall with 52.25 points. We missed the snook both days, and only three boats caught snook the first day and no
snook were caught on the second day. Congrats to the winners who put up a good showing no doubt! Big thanks to
Charlotte Ambrogio who put up an excellent event as usual!
On another note, we have been doing good on the other species like sheepshead, black drum and I even caught a
pompano on fly during the tournament. I am looking forward to spring/summer as well as we will be getting into
tarpon season and sightfishing is only going to be getting better as it warms up!
